Boat Sinks Near Alcatraz Island, 1 Dead, 3 Missing
A boat capsized close to Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay, leading to one confirmed death and three individuals reported missing. Drunk Driver Involved in Fatal Boat Crash
A weekend accident on the Fox River in Illinois turned deadly when a driver, reportedly under the influence, crashed into a woman’s boat while traveling at an alarming speed of 130 mph. This tragic event occurred on July 25 and resulted in the death of a 48-year-old woman and injuries to her husband. According to authorities, Richard Stevenson, 45, is accused of crashing his 31-foot pontoon into a 20-foot Crown Line in a no-wake zone in the early afternoon after heavy drinking.
Prosecutors revealed that the woman was found decapitated at the scene. At a hearing for Stevenson, a judge ordered him to remain in custody as the case unfolds. The circumstances surrounding the accident are particularly harrowing. Deputy Chief Brian Miller described Stevenson as a “ticking time bomb,” indicating a serious concern for public safety.
After the collision, Stevenson was discovered near a tree on the shore, having left the scene before the police arrived. Two passengers from his boat had also fled at that time. Blood tests taken after the incident indicated that Stevenson had a blood alcohol concentration of approximately 0.236, significantly above the legal limit, shortly after the crash, and about 0.20 at the time of the accident.
During the hearing, it was also shown that Stevenson had refused sobriety tests and initially declined a court-ordered blood draw. Eyewitnesses assert that he had been drinking throughout the day and driving recklessly before colliding with the victim’s boat.
Further evidence from the hearing revealed a troubling history for Stevenson, including three previous DWIs and multiple reckless driving and speeding offenses.
Currently, he faces charges for two counts of aggravated driving under the influence resulting in death and one count of reckless homicide. McHenry County State’s Attorney Randy L. Freese expressed deep concern, stating, “Our rivers and lakes should be a safe place for families,” emphasizing the tragedy’s impact on the community.
Stevenson’s next court appearance is scheduled for August 5. As of now, the name of the deceased woman remains undisclosed. Authorities continue to seek justice for the victim and her family amid this heartbreaking incident.
