Drunk, pregnant Michigan mom-of-four crashed into at least 15 pedestrians, killing two

A heavily intoxicated pregnant woman crashed into a relative’s home as she was crossing the road in Michigan on Saturday, injuring 13 people and killing two, before fleeing the scene, according to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office.

Ashley Monroe, 35, pleaded not guilty at her arraignment Monday to six counts of DUI, two counts of DUI causing death and one count of failure to stop at the scene of an accident. fox 2 detroit report.

Prosecutors say she drove away from the crash scene just north of Lansing in Watership Township around 6:30 p.m. with a nearly empty bottle of Crown Royal and antidepressants in her bag. According to local reports, Jonathan Esch, 30, and Daniel Harris, 42, died at the scene. The other 14 victims were rushed to nearby hospitals. The police said in a Facebook post that the men “are mutually recognized as family” and range in age from 2 to 61.

The 38-year-old woman remains in serious condition. The other victim’s injuries were not life-threatening, authorities wrote.

Seven victims in the crowd were under the age of 8, the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

However, District Court Judge Michael Clarizio opted to double the recommended amount and give Monroe a $1 million cash/surety bond, FOX 2 reported.

“What the court knows for certain is that two people died,” Clarizio said, “two people lost their lives prematurely. We’re not just talking about a victim, we’re talking about multiple victims.”
