DSA leaders in NYC earn key positions in Zohran Mamdani's transition team

Transition Team Announced for Mayor-Elect Zoran Mamdani

Zoran Mamdani’s transition team is taking shape, led by two key figures from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in New York City. This past Monday, as part of his preparations for assuming office, Mamdani appointed a recognized progressive advocate—someone with a history in Bill de Blasio’s administration—to his commission’s staff.

Among the 400 individuals selected to assist in the transition are local DSA co-chairs Gustavo Gordillo and Grace Moser. They recently expressed that the results of the mayoral election represent a shared mission aimed at advancing a socialist agenda.

During a news conference held in East Harlem, Mamdani stated, “We’re actually going to build a completely different City Hall,” while announcing the formation of 17 committees to guide the transition.

Gordillo will take a role in the Economic and Workforce Development Committee, whereas Moser has been appointed to the Committee for Small Business and Minority- and Women-Owned Businesses.

Most of these commissions align with previous mayoral transitions, addressing classic topics like health and economic development. However, two new groups focusing on community organizing and worker justice reflect a more progressive stance.

Mamdani revealed that over 70,000 New Yorkers from across various neighborhoods applied for positions within his administration, which is set to take office on January 1.

Questions linger about whether Mamdani will depend mainly on relatively inexperienced allies, particularly from the DSA, or opt for more seasoned civil servants to fill City Hall positions. However, the structure of his transition suggests an inclination toward experience.

Some notable figures in the transition committee include:

  • Former FDNY Secretary Laura Kavanaugh, a member of the Government Operations Committee with experience from the Eric Adams administration.
  • Rodney Harrison, a respected police officer from the NYPD and Suffolk County, will work on the community safety committee.
  • Oxiris Barbot, the former City Health Commissioner under de Blasio, serves on the Board of Health.
  • Kathryn Wilde, head of the New York City business group Partnership, is involved in the Economic and Workforce Development Committee.
  • Jed Walentas, chairman of the New York Real Estate Commission, represents the real estate sector in the housing commission.
  • Christine Marinoni, an actress known for her role in “Sex and the City” and spouse of former gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon, is part of the Youth Education Commission.

Mamdani is also joined by several influential advocates and experts, including Ann-Marie Gray, who heads the housing-focused group Open New York.

Gray emphasized her commitment to the committee, stating that Mamdani’s approach to the housing crisis in New York is multifaceted—protecting current tenants while planning for future developments.

This transition team also features local organizers, labor leaders, and policy experts, including Ai-Jen Poo, who leads the National Domestic Workers Alliance and received a MacArthur “genius” grant in 2014. Poo has also made headlines for attending the Golden Globe Awards with actress Meryl Streep.

Mamdani noted the establishment of a worker justice commission, citing past failures to support blue-collar New Yorkers. He also pointed to the importance of community organizing committees in bridging gaps in services.

“There’s often a gap between what City Hall intends and the reality on the ground across the city,” he mentioned. “We aim to gather insights from New Yorkers themselves about these disconnects.”

“This period will be a chance to learn from the past and enhance how City Hall can effectively implement its vision.”
