Ducks’ Frank Vatrano looks back fondly at time with Rangers

TORONTO — He’s the people’s choice to fill the right wing slot alongside Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad, as he did successfully 10 weeks after the 2022 trade deadline.

Frank Vatrano, now in his second season with the Ducks, said he knew nothing of the chatter. However, the All-Star right wing spoke rather poetically about his time with the Rangers.

“I think playing in New York was the biggest thing that happened in my career so far,” Vatrano said here during All-Star media day Thursday. “It was great for me to play with two guys like Micah and Claeys. I proved to myself and a lot of people that I can play a role inside the top six at the highest level of the playoffs. did.

“It was an honor to be there and play with those two, it was awesome.”

Vatrano, who turns 30 on March 14, has one year left on his contract and carries a cap hit of $3.65 million. If the Rangers acquire him, he won’t have to think about the right wing position until the end of 2024-25.

And since he’s a fourth-round pick from Florida at the deadline and not a one-time rental like he was in 2022, the price to acquire him could be justified.

That’s because this time it’s not the fourth round, and it’s not Vatrano, who had 22 goals, 14 assists and 36 points during the hiatus following a 22-19-41 season a year ago. Anaheim GM Pat Verbeek could try to twin Vatrano and rental property player Adam Henrique, and could be looking for a pair of first-rounders.

Vatrano, who has a shooter’s mentality, had eight goals and five assists in 22 regular-season games for the Blueshirts, then five goals and eight assists in 20 games leading up to the conference finals for the club he skated with at BFF.

“It’s always great to play with those guys, but at the end of the day.” [trade talks] It’s out of my control,” Vatrano said. “I don’t really know what’s going on there, but I had a lot of fun when I was there.

“It was unbelievable to play with those guys.”
