Former Kickboxer Duke Rufus Passes Away at 55

Jeffrey “Duke” Rufus, a prominent figure in the kickboxing and mixed martial arts community, has died at the age of 55. His business partner, Scott Joffe, confirmed that Rufus passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Joffe shared on Facebook that Rufus was more than just a champion kickboxer and well-known trainer; he served as a mentor, innovator, father, and friend. His impact on the world of mixed martial arts was profound. Joffe wrote, “His knowledge, charisma, and passion inspired countless fighters to reach unimaginable heights. From world champions to newcomers, everyone who met him felt his genuine care and unwavering belief in their potential. His absence creates an irreplaceable void in sports and in the hearts of those who knew him.”

Rufus’s kickboxing career took off in the 1990s, during which he secured eight titles with an impressive record of 36 wins, 8 losses, and 1 draw. His last title came in 1998, when he became the IKF World Super Heavyweight Champion.

His final match was in 2008, marking the end of his competitive journey.

After achieving success as a fighter, Rufus transitioned to coaching, founding the Rufusport MMA Academy. His roster of successful students includes former champions like Anthony Pettis and Ben Askren, along with WWE star CM Punk.

“When my father was killed, you took me in and became my father… Together we accomplished the impossible and reached the top!” Pettis expressed on Instagram, adding, “I will always be proud of you. You have taught me so much, and I will ensure your legacy continues.”

In a follow-up post, Joffe noted that the Rufusport MMA Academy will continue to operate in line with Rufus’s enduring philosophy and dedication to excellence.

“The measure of a man is not what he says or does while he is alive, but what others say about him after he dies,” Joffe posted on Instagram, reflecting on their many shared accomplishments. “We will keep working towards honoring the Rufus name.”
