Democrats Push for Release of Epstein Files
On Tuesday, Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin from Illinois stood alongside his fellow Democrats to advocate for the release of federal documents related to the case of Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender and financier.
In an interview with CNN’s Kate Bolduan, two Senate Democrats expressed strong support for the release, stating they would like to see the files made public “absolutely.”
“Absolutely. Leader Jeffries is right. They’ve misunderstood Americans with this conspiracy theory for years or are hiding it now,” Durbin commented during the interview.
Representative Jeffries emphasized on Monday that if the White House hesitates, Congress should intervene to compel the Trump administration to disclose all files pertaining to Epstein. He argued that the Department of Justice lacked a valid reason to keep this information secret unless there’s something they’re concealing.
“The American people deserve to know the truth,” Jeffries told reporters at a Congressional briefing. “What is the Trump administration and the Department of Justice hiding?”
Epstein died in a Manhattan jail in 2019 while awaiting trial for charges of sex trafficking involving minors. His case has fueled right-wing conspiracy theories, especially among some Trump supporters who claim that the government possesses Epstein’s client list but refuses to release it in order to protect powerful elites in politics and business.
Nevertheless, last week, a memo from Trump’s Justice Department asserted that there was no evidence Epstein maintained a client list or attempted to intimidate influential individuals possibly involved in illegal sexual activities.
The memo also reaffirmed that Epstein’s death was ruled a suicide, countering theories suggesting foul play was involved.
A number of frustrated Democrats have joined the call for transparency and the release of these files. In a recent interview, Durbin echoed similar sentiments, insisting, “It really reaches the bottom line. Let the Americans see the truth.”
“There’s something about it that Americans should face; they have nothing to hide, yet they need to confront that embarrassment,” he added.
