Dusty May’s Early Scouting for Championship Game
Dusty May, the head coach of Michigan, didn’t wait around before the national championship game, even before knowing if his team would make it through. Reportedly, he was spotted courtside during the Final Four match between the University of Illinois and Arizona, just hours before Michigan’s game at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Michigan’s keen eye for detail paid off, as they triumphed over Arizona 91-73, ensuring their place in Monday’s championship against UW.
For May, this is particularly meaningful. Before leading Michigan, he played a significant role on a Florida Atlantic squad that reached the Final Four in 2023 but fell short against San Diego State. Just two days later, San Diego faced the Huskies, who went on to win back-to-back college championships under coach Dan Hurley.
Missed that opportunity to face the Huskies back then, May now looks forward to this rematch after another successful March Madness season, marking his first with Michigan.
However, things aren’t without complications. Michigan star Jaxel Lendeborg suffered an injury during the last game, facing issues with his knee and ankle. Although he returned to the game, uncertainty lingers about how effective he’ll be for the championship, even as Lendeborg reassured reporters that he plans to play.
The Huskies, coached by Hurley, are hoping for their third title in four seasons, having just fended off a strong comeback from Illinois. With May’s courtside insights, key players like Taris Reed Jr. and Braylon Mullins stepped up, with Reed scoring 17 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
May acknowledged the unique challenge his team presents based on their style of play but also recognized that quick preparation can be tough for both teams in this high-stakes setting. His early scouting mission could be a game changer as they look to capitalize on the insights gained.
