Things are getting intense at the Dutton Ranch.
In the fifth episode of the Yellowstone spinoff, Carter (Finn Little) is devastated by the death of his friend, Dwight (Ray McKinnon).
Carter, the adopted son of Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), has been around since the original “Yellowstone” series and moved to Texas with them for this spinoff. Even at 19, he’s still navigating high school, which he’s not too fond of. To escape his situation, he begins skipping school to help Dwight, an older cowboy with a penchant for drinking and giving advice.
This episode sees police storming Dwight’s ranch while he and Carter attempt to flee. Despite Dwight’s efforts to protect him, the officers resort to force, resulting in Dwight’s tragic death. Carter, pinned to the ground and watching the chaos unfold, can’t hold back his tears.
Sheriff Wade (played by Josh Stewart) tries to justify the killing by claiming Dwight had a knife, but there’s a sense that this is just a flimsy excuse.
Later, in the police station’s interrogation room, the sheriff paints Dwight as nothing more than a “drunk,” “insurance fraudster,” and “thief,” urging Carter to reconsider his association with him.
Carter responds emotionally, stating, “He was my friend. You killed him.”
The sheriff advises Carter not to end up like Dwight and suggests he should remain silent about the incident. “You weren’t there tonight. You didn’t see anything… never say a word,” he threatens.
After leaving the station, a heartbroken Carter calls Oleanna for support, seeking comfort as he grapples with what just happened.
Meanwhile, Beth and Rip are involved in a delicate partnership with Oleanna’s powerful grandmother, Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), who operates a neighboring ranch. While this arrangement is meant to be short-lived, Rip cautions Beth about Beulah’s potentially dangerous nature.
“Dutton Ranch” airs Fridays at 8pm ET on Paramount+ and Paramount Network.
