Nick Sirianni Defends Jalen Hurts Against Super Bowl Criticism
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni addressed critics who suggested that quarterback Jalen Hurts single-handedly led the team to victory in the Super Bowl during the 2024 season. On Monday, Sirianni expressed frustration with the narrative, feeling it undermines the team effort that contributed to their success. He pointed out that Hurts’s performance was bolstered by a standout running game and a solid offensive line.
“He plays the most crucial position in all sports,” Sirianni remarked. “Football is the ultimate team game, and what really impresses me about him is his selflessness and commitment to winning.” He noted that, while most quarterbacks would prefer to pass frequently, Hurts is flexible and prepared to adjust his game as needed.
The Eagles had a strong regular season, finishing with a 14-3 record, which led them to a significant win over the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. Their offense was seventh in the league for points scored and eighth for yards gained. Hurts threw for 2,903 yards and 18 touchdowns, a feat made easier by having 2024 Offensive Player of the Year Saquon Barkley as part of their lineup.
Sirianni emphasized that for him, success lies in ensuring the team has the best chance to win. “Can you name any teams that are consistently successful without good players?” he questioned. “You simply can’t.” He acknowledged that Hurts’s talents alone aren’t sufficient—in a team sport, success is about collaboration.
Since becoming the starting quarterback in 2021, Hurts has proven himself as an elite player, earning two Pro Bowl selections and being named MVP of Super Bowl LIX. His career stats include 14,667 passing yards and 85 touchdowns across 77 games.
