NFL Coaching Candidates Weigh Philadelphia’s Challenges
The search for the Eagles’ offensive coordinator continues, and former NFL player Ross Tucker recently sought insights from potential candidates. This comes after the controversial departure of Kevin Pattullo, who faced severe backlash from the passionate Philly fanbase, even leading to damage to his home.
Tucker, who provides commentary for Eagles preseason games, mentioned, “Any coach knows what being an offensive coordinator in Philadelphia entails.” He noted that the treatment Pattullo received—like having eggs thrown at his house—paints a picture of the environment that candidates must consider.
Pattullo faced unending scrutiny since stepping into the role after Kellen Moore left for the Saints last offseason. The team’s struggles on offense only intensified criticism. Fan discontent peaked following a home loss to the Bears in late November, which seemed to exacerbate issues for Pattullo at home.
Earlier this month, following a first-round playoff defeat to the 49ers, Pattullo’s play-calling was again sharply criticized, leading to his dismissal.
The Eagles are currently evaluating a range of candidates, including former Giants head coach Brian Daboll. However, Tucker pointed out that coaches with competing opportunities may think carefully about their choices, particularly with the current uncertainties in Philadelphia.
Tucker reflected on the decision-making process for candidates like Daboll, emphasizing personal factors: “When he sits down with family to discuss where they want to live or what schools to consider, Philadelphia’s situation isn’t looking too good right now.”
Daboll, who previously coached the Giants for over three seasons, is now one of the frontrunners for the Bills’ head coach position following Sean McDermott’s firing. If not offered a second chance at that role, reports indicate he could join new Titans manager Robert Saleh’s staff as offensive coordinator. This hypothetical move would place him in a position to work with Cam Ward, this year’s top draft pick, rather than with the Eagles’ star players like Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley.
Additionally, former Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel recently accepted the Chargers’ offensive coordinator position, which was initially rumored to be a top choice for the Eagles. Zach Robinson is also no longer on the table, as he’s expected to become the Buccaneers’ next offensive coordinator.
Interestingly, the Eagles seem to be directing their focus towards the NFC North. Reports indicate that the team has requested to meet with Declan Doyle, the Bears’ offensive coordinator.
