East Coast beaches issue fecal contamination alerts for Labor Day

Warnings of Water Contamination on East Coast Beaches

This holiday weekend, beaches across the East Coast, from Maine to Florida, are facing warnings of “fecal contamination.” Several popular beach spots have even closed due to this issue, including Keys Memorial Beach in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and Benjamin’s Beach in Bayshore, New York.

The US Environmental Protection Agency assessed water quality and found that levels of fecal bacteria at some sites exceeded health standards. These bacteria can potentially cause illness in roughly 32 out of every 1,000 swimmers.

John Rumpler, a clean water advocate, pointed out that much of the pollution stems from aging sewer systems, which are crucial to address. He said, “These beaches are treasures for families across New England and the country. They are shared resources. We need to invest in preventing our own waste from contaminating the places we swim.”

Despite the warnings, many beachgoers still plan to enjoy the ocean. For instance, a retired dentist visiting Rehoboth Beach in Delaware expressed little concern, believing the ocean’s natural flow would help mitigate any pollution issues. “I don’t think I’ll be at risk,” he mentioned, indicating a degree of optimism about the situation.

In North Carolina, meanwhile, several beaches received warnings due to heightened levels of fecal bacteria. Although the beaches remain open, swimmers were advised to avoid going underwater. Erin Brian Mirsch from the state’s Department of Environmental Quality noted that heavy rains from recent storms, like Hurricane Erin, have exacerbated the situation by overloading storm drains.

It’s clear that if you have compromised immunity, caution is crucial. Enjoying the beach can be a mixed bag this weekend, as many will dive in despite the risks, probably hoping for the best.
