Michelle Obama has expressed her concerns regarding President Donald Trump’s ongoing project in the White House Ballroom, tying the demolition of the East Wing to her broader point about the historical significance of the first lady’s office space.
These comments were made during a live podcast in Brooklyn. Her statements, reported in Vanity Fair, highlighted the East Wing as a core part of the first ladies’ traditional role.
Obama remarked, “When we talk about the East Wing, it’s the center of our work.” She continued, “Denigrating it and destroying it and pretending it doesn’t matter reflects how you view that role.”

The former first lady also mentioned her discussions with the Obama administration’s West Wing team, explaining how she and her advisors played a role in supporting President Barack Obama. She noted that a positive public image of the first family could translate to “five additional approval points.”
Her criticisms are reminiscent of earlier discussions about the same subject. During a recent taping with Stephen Colbert, she noted that the East Wing felt “brighter,” emphasizing it as a space where families and pets gathered. She expressed a sense of confusion about the current state of national values, saying, “I feel like I don’t know what’s important to us as a nation anymore.”

The dialogue around the ballroom has resonated with other past White House occupants. Former President Joe Biden, speaking in Omaha, characterized Trump’s actions as potentially akin to bringing a “wrecking ball into the country,” referring to the ballroom as “the perfect symbol of the presidency.”
Former daughter Chelsea Clinton wrote an opinion piece for USA Today, referring to Trump’s construction efforts as “a wrecking ball to our heritage.” She perceives the White House as a property belonging to the American public, and referred to it as “a mirror of our democracy.” Additionally, former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton focused on generating support for progressive causes through merchandise on Instagram.
Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt claimed in a report from Fox News that the backlash was unwarranted, noting that most modern presidents have undertaken renovations. She mentioned Obama’s need to host a state dinner in a rented tent due to space limitations.
The administration released a “Timeline of Key Events” on the official White House website, chronicling significant building updates alongside notable historical episodes, including President Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky.
Additionally, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump had previously proposed constructing a modular banquet hall in the Obama White House back in 2010, but that suggestion was not pursued.
