Ed Harris Expresses Concerns Over Role in Dutton Ranch

Ed Harris has voiced his worries regarding his experience on the show Dutton Ranch. Recently, he mentioned that filming the first season wasn’t quite what he expected. Yet, he remained involved in the decision to appoint a new showrunner, Benjamin Cavell, after the departure of original showrunner Chad Feehan.

Reports suggest that the switch was, in part, due to Harris feeling that his character wasn’t being used effectively. He even hinted at wanting to leave during the first season because he felt, well, a bit important but not in the way he anticipated.

In an interview, Harris shared his frustrations, saying, “Halfway through the first season, I was ready to go. I didn’t feel like I was being taken seriously,” he said, noting that he felt a little overlooked.

Initially, there had been promises regarding the significance of his role as veterinarian Everett McKinney, yet the reality was different. He expressed disappointment that a scene he was part of ended up being cut from the show. “I had a moment where I went to the microphone, and that just… didn’t make it to the final cut,” he explained.

Harris said the producers indicated that the musical number he performed was too cheerful for the episode’s darker tone, which he thought was enough reason to reconsider his involvement with the show.

While his comments about feeling underused have led to some acknowledgment from the production team, he didn’t specifically name Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone, when discussing these issues. “I mentioned feeling insignificant, and their reaction was just, ‘Oh.’ Yet, I’ve been told there’s more for my character to do in the upcoming season,” he remarked, a bit frustrated.

Interestingly, Harris later noted that watching the show changed his perspective on his character, leading him to believe that the role was important in the overall narrative, even if he wasn’t feeling that during filming.

Despite his candid remarks, Harris is still under contract for two more seasons. However, it’s uncertain if he seriously contemplated leaving the series.

Dutton Ranch is set to premiere on Paramount+ in May and will act as a follow-up to Yellowstone, which concludes in December 2024. The storyline will center on characters Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler as they transition from Montana to South Texas, aiming to build a new life together on a ranch.

As this unfolds, it seems that Harris’s experience and artistic concerns may very well play a role in shaping the future direction of Dutton Ranch.
