Massachusetts has become a notable scene for the ongoing political tug-of-war within the Democratic Party, marking a strategic contest between the left and more centrist factions.
In an interesting twist, progressives are throwing their weight behind the established 80-year-old Senator Ed Markey against the younger, more moderate Representative Seth Moulton, as the state gets ready for its primary elections on Tuesday.
The primary election for the Senate seat pits Markey against Moulton, who is 47 years old. This race reflects the Democratic Party’s quest for generational evolution, a movement invigorated two years ago when then-81-year-old President Joe Biden stepped away from the presidential race, grappling with concerns about his mental and physical readiness in light of a challenging debate performance against Donald Trump.
There is also a competitive six-way race to take Moulton’s seat in the U.S. House. Notably, four members of the state’s entirely Democratic congressional delegation are encountering challenges from more progressive candidates. Additionally, Republicans in the Bay State will select a candidate to compete against Democratic Governor Maura Healey.

The trio had earlier collaborated with Markey on the Green New Deal.

In his campaign, Moulton emphasizes generational change, arguing, “I served with some of the most amazing leaders in my life in the Marines, but at 23 years old, they don’t get to run for Congress. I think we should have upper age limits as well.”

While both candidates align on several issues, such as the abolition of ICE and allowing biological males to compete in female sports, Moulton faced scrutiny for past comments regarding his daughters and safety in sports, leading him to apologize during the primary.
Heading into the primary election, Markey has shown strong polling and fundraising numbers. The candidate who emerges victorious is expected to be a favorite in the general election against attorney John Deaton, the presumed Republican Senate nominee.
In the race to replace Moulton in Massachusetts’ 6th Congressional District, six contenders are vying for the Democratic nomination. This group includes former Andover Selectman Dan Koh, financial tech executive John Beccia, and state Representative Tram Nguyen. Koh, who was part of Biden’s administration, boasts endorsements from both Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
The ultimate victor in the Democratic primary will take on Republican Micah Q. Jones, who currently has no opposition for his nomination.

Among the incumbents facing challenges from the left, House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark is also under pressure from two challengers. Similarly, long-serving Democratic Representative Stephen Lynch is working to fend off a challenge from attorney Patrick Roath, who has outpaced him in fundraising.
In the race for the Republican nomination for governor, Army veteran and businessman Mike Minogue is contending against Briani Shortsleeve, a Marine Corps veteran and former general manager of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. Minogue retains the state GOP’s endorsement.
The victor here will be in for a challenging general election against Healey, given Massachusetts’ Democratic stronghold, although Republicans have succeeded in past gubernatorial matches.

This primary could be particularly significant as it may be the last under the existing setup. Voters in Massachusetts will have the opportunity during the general election to decide on a ballot initiative meant to overhaul the state’s primary format, replacing it with a single, all-party primary system.
