Ed Markey expresses desire to recruit BIPOC and LGBTQ+ interns and faces harsh criticism.

Senator Ed Markey, a Democrat from Massachusetts, recently called for interns in his office but included a list of racial and gender considerations that sparked criticism.

At 80, Markey has been a Congressional member since 1976 and is currently running for re-election against John Deaton, a Republican and former U.S. Marine.

In a social media post, he stated, “I’m hiring motivated and eager interns for the Spring 2027 semester in my Boston office. BIPOC, LGBTQ+, working class, veterans, and other underrepresented candidates with Massachusetts ties are encouraged to apply.”

BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.

Markey faced backlash, with critics alleging discriminatory practices. One conservative commentator remarked on Twitter, “Blatant discrimination.” Another questioned the need for applicants to reveal their sexual orientation as a hiring factor.

Additional responses included remarks about the strange conditioning of hiring practices and some suggesting that it might warrant investigation by civil rights organizations.

A critic even stated, “I am a STRAIGHT, WHITE, REPUBLICAN, over-40 MALE… my application will be in your office within the week. If you refuse me, I will sue you into oblivion.”

Markey is recognized for his progressive stance, promising to support legislation for a transgender bill of rights. He has also advocated for the Green New Deal and has worked alongside Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a fellow progressive.

If re-elected, Markey has mentioned that it would be his final term, as he would be 86 at the end of that period.

Polls indicate that Markey holds a significant lead over Deaton.
