Famed comedian Ed O’Neill has revealed what happened the day he left the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1969.
Before becoming a star on hit TV shows “Modern Family” and “Married…with Children,” O’Neal was briefly a professional athlete in the 1960s.
The actor attended Ohio University on an athletic scholarship and then transferred to Youngstown State University, where he played as a defensive lineman from 1967 to 1968.
After college, he signed a professional contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1969, but was released during training camp.
About “Named Games” Podcasts O’Neal revealed he had a memorable day with NFL legend Julian Edelman after leaving the team.
“This was not too long after I’d been laid off, so I was packing. I didn’t want to come home and explain this. I said I was going to Pittsburgh because I had friends there. And I had a basic idea of where my friends lived. I [a cab driver] “I was walking down the street and I saw a bar and I said, ‘This is the place, my friend lives really close to the bar, drop me off here,'” O’Neill recalled.
“Are you sure you want to do this? Why don’t you just get in your car and get the hell out of here?”
The actor who played Al Bundy quickly realized that the moon landing had just happened.
“So I went to the bar. It was about 2 p.m. and I ordered a beer. The news came on and they were showing Armstrong walking on the moon. I thought, at least someone was having a good day. And then they went to watch a sports show – Pittsburgh, of course. And they said, ‘Linebacker Ed O’Neill got fired by the Steelers today.'”
Patrons at the bar recognized him as an NFL player from television and bought him several drinks, but O’Neal only regained his senses at 3 a.m. when he was pulled over by police in a car with a female companion.
“[The cop] “He said, ‘Did you get fired by Pittsburgh today?’ I said, ‘Yeah,’ and he fired me.”
The 78-year-old also spoke with radio host Rich Eisen in 2016 about his Steelers tryout.
“[Training camp] It went pretty well, actually,” O’Neill told the host. CBS“My dad drove me to St. Vincent College, and when I came down the steps and saw all these guys milling around, he said to me, ‘Are you sure you want to do this? You could just get in your car and get out of here.'”
“I actually enjoyed it, but my problem was that I had never played [outside linebacker] That was the case before. So I was trying to learn that and get into the team at the same time.”
The former Steelers player lasted two weeks before getting the news of his release from his coach, who apparently said he might be a fit with the Philadelphia Eagles.
“I think he told me I could go to the Eagles. … He said, ‘You can call me.’
However, O’Neill said he was “tired of football” at the time and turned the opportunity down.
According to IMDB, O’Neal’s first acting role was in the 1980 film “cruisingStarring Al Pacino.
