Macklemore and Ed Sheeran Controversy

The situation involving Macklemore has taken a new turn, as Ed Sheeran is denying any involvement in Macklemore’s dismissal from his tour, which was reportedly due to Macklemore’s pro-Palestine and anti-Israel statements made during performances.

Recently, Macklemore was let go from the remaining eight shows on Sheeran’s “Loop Tour,” scheduled to conclude in December. Following his termination, the rapper criticized Sheeran on social media and suggested that their friendship might be at risk.

According to various sources, Sheeran has shifted the blame for the decision to the tour promoter. He stated, “Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter’s decision. It was not mine. Macklemore’s contract for the tour was with the promoter, not me. I would never let down the fans who planned to see the shows, nor abandon the crew and other musicians that depend on me for their livelihoods.”

Sheeran expressed his dismay about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine and mentioned that some venues were ready to cancel their shows if Macklemore remained part of the lineup. He claimed to have tried to negotiate with the venues throughout the week but met resistance, especially from Robert Kraft.

Kraft, an NFL owner, reportedly voiced his disapproval of Macklemore’s anti-Israel rhetoric and informed Sheeran’s tour manager that he would not allow the rapper to perform at his Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts. He also convinced managers of several other venues to demand Macklemore’s removal from the tour.

Though Kraft offered to meet with Macklemore to share his perspective on the situation, he emphasized that he could not allow the spreading of hate on his stage.

Pop singer Pink joined the fray by initially posting criticism of Macklemore’s comments. She later revealed that Macklemore’s remarks had frightened her and others close to her.

On the flip side, Macklemore has received support from various artists who are now criticizing Sheeran for his decision—or rather, for not fighting to keep Macklemore on the tour. For example, Stella Parton expressed concern over what she termed a “genocide” in Gaza, arguing that it’s troubling for an artist to be removed from a tour for calling attention to such issues.

Additionally, a group known for its anti-Israel stance, called Kneecap, publicly sided with Macklemore, sharing a photo on social media with a “FREE PALESTINE” caption.

Support for Macklemore also came from artists like Paloma Faith, Zara Larsson, Garbage, Kehlani, and Toni Watson, among others.

Meanwhile, some critics highlighted instances of Macklemore perpetuating antisemitic stereotypes, including a recent performance where he wore a fake nose and beard, along with giving a Nazi salute while dressed provocatively at a concert.
