Lab Analyzing DNA from Guthrie’s Home

NPR public editor Kelly McBride stated Thursday that a remark made by NPR host Steve Inskeep was deemed “inappropriate.” Inskeep compared the look of a potential suspect in Nancy Guthrie’s case to that of an ICE officer.

Last week, Inskeep interviewed a former FBI profiler and discussed doorbell camera footage featuring a masked individual believed to be connected to Guthrie’s disappearance on February 1 from her home in Tucson, Arizona. Inskeep noted that the person seemed suspicious, being armed and looking somewhat like an immigration official. He described the figure’s movements and appearance in detail, even mentioning actions like putting something in their mouth.

McBride relayed that many listeners commented on Inskeep’s comparison, arguing it was “irresponsible.” NPR executives chose not to comment publicly but did not defend the statement either. McBride pointed out that likening the person on Guthrie’s porch to a federal immigration officer was both out of line and inflammatory, indicating that this remark was interpreted by some as a commentary on controversial law enforcement tactics. This understandably upset those following the story closely.

She also mentioned that Inskeep’s comments weren’t scripted, and an anonymous NPR executive clarified that they were not intended as political commentary but rather as a plain description of the suspect.

McBride expressed her disappointment regarding NPR’s response to the situation, noting that they could have explained the context to their audience, potentially avoiding further criticism about bias.

The search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, who is related to Today co-host Savannah Guthrie, has been ongoing for nearly three weeks since she was reported missing. The FBI described the suspect from surveillance images as an average-sized man, around 5 feet 9 to 5 feet 10 inches tall.
