A former Teacher of the Year from Louisiana has been arrested on allegations of sexual misconduct involving a minor, and this is her second arrest in just a week.
Christie Elizabeth Dunbar Oster, 38, had been teaching at Broussard Middle School in Lafayette. Last September, she was celebrated as the Teacher of the Year by the school.
“The Lafayette Police Department has stated that the alleged victim is a past student of Oster.”
Following her initial recognition, the Lafayette Police Department reported her first arrest last Wednesday. She faces charges related to sexual knowledge of a juvenile and lewd acts with a juvenile.
After posting bail, which was set at $30,000, Oster hardly had time to breathe before being arrested again just days later. According to reports, this second warrant was linked to a different incident, noted to have occurred in Broussard, but not necessarily at the school.
The Broussard Police Department stepped in after they learned of this incident involving Oster and the victim and subsequently issued another arrest warrant.
Oster voluntarily surrendered to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office on Monday. She now faces additional charges of lewd acts on a juvenile, with her bail set at $10,000 for these new allegations.
As per prison records, she was released shortly after paying the bail. The Lafayette Police have confirmed that the alleged victim is, in fact, one of Oster’s former students.
Sources noted that a curfew order was set for Oster earlier this month.
Protection orders, whether termed restraining orders or injunctions against abuse, aim to ensure safety by requiring one person to avoid contact with another.
In light of these events, Broussard Middle School officials have placed Oster on administrative leave, and she is no longer listed on the school’s website.
Efforts to reach comments from both the Lafayette Police Department and school officials have not been met with responses yet.
