Edwin Diaz blows another big save in Mets’ brutal loss to Diamondbacks

PHOENIX — Edwin Diaz was called for a four-out save Wednesday, sending the Mets into a coyote-infested desert night.

Diaz, in a nod to his bad old season-destroying days in May, walked the first two batters he faced before giving up a game-winning grand slam to Corbin Carroll.

The Mets were unable to bounce back after losing 8-5 to the Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

Diaz gave up a walk-off home run to Padres phenom Jackson Merrill in the ninth inning on Sunday, marking his second consecutive terrible outing.

This latest blow has left the Mets four games behind Atlanta in the race for the National League's third wild card spot.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. walked Phil Matthon in the top of the eighth to start the comeback charge.

Maton battled back to get the next two outs before manager Carlos Mendoza called for Diaz to pitch, who walked Pavin Smith and Gerard Perdomo before Carroll hit his second home run of the game over the right-field fence.

That night, the Mets were down 0-4 after the fourth inning, but came back to tie the game in the fifth.

In the sixth inning, Starling Marte's footwork was the deciding factor in giving the Mets the winning run.

Marte bunted, singled, stole second base and then advanced to third on a grounder by Brandon Nimmo.

Most notably, Pete Alonso sprinted to home plate when he hit a fly ball to left-center field.

Gurriel's throw was head-first into Marte's hand, but it flew past catcher Adrian del Castillo's tag.

It was a strong performance for a player who had missed two months with a bone bruise in his right knee.

Luis Severino was treated by manager Carlos Mendoza after being hit in the leg by a liner in the top of the third inning of a Mets loss on Aug. 28, 2024. Severino remained in the game but struggled to complete the fifth inning, allowing four runs. AP

Luis Severino left the game after pitching 4 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits, striking out nine and walking one.

The right-hander was hit by a kickoff ball on his left ankle in the third inning, which may have contributed to his disappointing performance.

Luis Guillorme, wearing his third uniform this season against his former team, threw nine pitches in the second inning and came to bat with a one-run single to put the Mets up 1-0.

Guillorme began this season with the Braves before moving on to the Angels and Diamondbacks.

Gurriel walked to start the comeback, Adrian del Castillo singled, and then Guillorme, who started at second base because MVP candidate Ketel Marte was placed on the injured list, singled with two outs.

Severino hurt his left ankle on a putback from Jake McCarthy in the third inning and walked gingerly around the mound during visits with Mendoza and the trainer.

Severino remained in the game. After McCarthy stole second base and reached third on a throwing error by Francisco Alvarez, Joc Pederson hit a two-run home run to right field to extend the Diamondbacks' lead to 3–0.

In the fourth inning, Carroll hit a solo home run to center field off of Severino to put the Mets behind by four runs.

However, the Mets' offense woke up in the fifth inning against left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez.

The big hit was a two-run homer by Harrison Bader that tied the game at 4-4 after the Mets had barely managed two runs. Nimmo walked in the top of the inning (the Mets' first runner of the night) and J.D. Martinez hit a rocket to right-center field for an RBI double.

Trailing 2-0 with two outs, Alvarez hit a one-run single and then Bader hit his 10th home run of the season and his second in four games.

Gurriel doubled with two outs in the fifth inning to end Severino's night, and Huáscar Brasovan came in to pitch to get del Castillo out.

Marte bunted and singled in the top of the inning, then stole second base and advanced on Nimmo's grounder.

Alonso hit a liner to left and Marte tagged up.

The throw home beat him, but Marte dived headfirst to escape Del Castillo's touch.
