Edwin Diaz is willing to participate in the World Baseball Classic again.

Edwin Diaz Open to Playing in 2026 WBC

In the recent All-Star Game, Edwin Diaz pitched a quick 13 pitches, showcasing his talent in an event that’s both a player honor and a fan favorite. Looking ahead, he expressed his willingness to participate again next March.

Even though his last World Baseball Classic (WBC) experience didn’t end well, the Mets have their sights set on participating in Puerto Rico’s 2026 WBC, although there’s still some uncertainty about it.

“As of now, I’ll play if I have the opportunity,” Diaz mentioned last week. “I want to represent my country.”

Of course, a lot can change between now and next March.

This season, Diaz is shining and might consider opting out of his current contract, which has two years left and about $37 million remaining, alongside a club option for 2028. So, before he jumps into any decisions regarding the tournament, he likely has spoken with the Mets about permission, or he might be weighing his options.

Despite his previous injury—he tore his right knee’s patellar tendon during a match against the Dominican Republic in 2023, which sidelined him for the entire MLB season—Diaz isn’t too worried about a potential return to the WBC.

“I didn’t get injured while pitching,” he said. “Injuries can happen anywhere, even at home. If I were pitching, I might feel a bit apprehensive about going back to the WBC, but I just want to enjoy representing my country.”

Diaz also shared that he helped captain Francis Colindore recruit players for the team that fell short against Mexico in the quarterfinals two years back.

“If I get the chance, I’d love to play alongside [Lindor] again,” he added.

Mets Updates

In other news, the Mets have confirmed they’ve signed 18 of their 19 draft picks. James Smith IV, selected in the 14th round and a right-handed pitcher and outfielder from Memphis, is expected to return to school instead.

Moreover, the team also announced the signing of nine undrafted free agents, including players from various colleges and universities.
