Legendary New York Yankees radio voice actor John Sterling has retired due to health issues.
The Yankees announced Monday that Sterling will retire after 36 seasons with the team. His retirement is effective immediately.
The Yankees will honor Sterling this Saturday during a pregame ceremony at Yankee Stadium. The 85-year-old was known for his personality, his voice, his unique way of calling home runs, and his spectacular way of declaring victory for the Yankees. (Related: Wow! In recent years, Sterling has reduced his workload and only scheduled a limited number of road trips for the 2024 campaign. But after a season-opening road trip with the Houston Astros and Arizona Diamondbacks, and the first homestand of the year, he decided it was time to officially call it a career.
Sterling, a New York native, played in 5,420 regular season games and 211 in the playoffs for the Yankees.This includes a series of phenomena 5,060 consecutive games It was called from September 1989 to July 2019.
