Efforts are being made to find injured Olympian Laura Dahlmeier following rockfall in Pakistan.

Reports have emerged indicating that Laura Dahlmeier, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, has sustained serious injuries while navigating the challenging terrain of the Karakoram mountain range in northern Pakistan.

Dahlmeier was initially thought to be missing. A German media outlet reported that the 31-year-old athlete suffered significant injuries during her climb. Search and rescue teams were still trying to establish contact with her as of Tuesday morning.

A spokesman from the Pakistani government informed Reuters that locals had managed to retrieve her from the landslide area. It’s estimated that Dahlmeier was climbing at an altitude of approximately 18,700 feet when the incident occurred.

According to her management, the accident took place on July 28, around noon local time, when a rock fell, injuring her and her climbing partner. They called for help immediately, initiating rescue efforts. However, due to the remote location, a helicopter was only able to reach the site on the morning of July 29.

Dahlmeier, who stepped back from professional sports in 2019, mentioned that her passion for the sport had faded, prompting her decision to retire. “After a lot of incredibly tough seasons with many highs and lows, I no longer feel the 100% passion I need for professional sports,” she explained.

She notably won gold medals at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, making history by being the first female biathlete to clinch both the sprint and double pursuit titles in the same games. Additionally, she earned a bronze in the 15km individual event during the same Olympics.
