Egg prices skyrocket to record highs over bird flu outbreak, says USDA

US Department of Agriculture blamed Egg prices have skyrocketed in recent weeks due to the outbreak of bird flu.

Egg production fell 4% in November to 8.92 billion eggs, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Of these, 7.68 billion were edible eggs and 1.24 billion were hatching eggs.

“Production is extremely tight and is probably at its lowest level since the start of bird flu in 2022.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 128 million birds in all 50 states have been infected with H5N1 avian influenza, including commercial poultry, wild waterfowl, and “backyard or hobby flocks.”

Californians have been forced to pay more than 70% more for eggs in the last month, according to price reporting service Expana.

Other factors are also contributing to the rise in egg prices. In Michigan, new law requires All stores must sell only free-range eggs. A Michigan State University study found that the law would require a specialized workforce and double the investment than traditional caged sources. The law was originally passed in 2009, but was delayed until the end of 2024.

Brian Moscogiuri, Global Trade Strategist, Eggs Unlimited told Axios The price of not only cage-free eggs but also commercial eggs has reached record highs.

“We are moving beyond the holiday baking season, but at the same time we continue to monitor avian influenza and its impact on supply,” he said. “Production is extremely tight and is probably at its lowest level since the start of bird flu in 2022.”

In December, California Governor Gavin Newsom (Democratic) declared a state of emergency due to the spread of avian influenza in an effort to jump-start the state's efforts to curb the spread.

“While the risk to the public remains low, we will continue to take all necessary steps to prevent the spread of this virus,” Newsom said.

Steve Ratner, an economic analyst during the Obama administration. I hoped The egg debacle will be a blow to President-elect Donald Trump.

He posted a graph of egg prices on social media, saying, “Chicken flu has an inflationary impact on egg prices and poses a growing threat to public health, making it difficult for President Trump, who has promised to lower prices and has a questionable public health record.'' This could cause difficulties.”
