Lake Tahoe Tragedy Claims Eight Lives
A family celebration took a heartbreaking turn over the weekend when a boat capsized amid a sudden storm on Lake Tahoe, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals, while two others were taken to the hospital.
The Eldorado County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the group had gathered to honor Paula Bodinovich’s 71st birthday.
Among the deceased were Paula Bodinovich, 71, and her husband Terry Pickles, 73, from Redwood City, California. Their son, Joshua Antony Pickles, 37, who lived in San Francisco and worked as a Drudash executive, was also a victim. Additionally, Peter Bayes, 72, a relative from Lincoln, California, was deceased. Four family friends lost their lives as well: Timothy O’Leary, 71, of Auburn, California; Teresa Gulali and James Guck, both 69, from Honeoye, New York; and Stephen Lindsay, 63, of Springwater, New York.
“These individuals were part of a family group that cherished their birthday gatherings at the lake,” stated the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and all affected by this tragedy.”
The group had set off on Saturday, June 21, in a 27-foot powerboat near DL Bliss State Park. What began as a beautiful day with clear skies quickly escalated into chaos as a powerful storm swept across the lake. Winds hit 30 knots and waves reached 8 feet, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The boat capsized before 3 p.m., throwing everyone on board into the cold waters of Lake Tahoe.
Two people managed to survive. They were wearing life jackets and were rescued and transported to a local hospital, according to reports.
BM1 Justin Smith, an executive petty officer for the Coast Guard, highlighted a common mistake, saying, “Many people don’t pay attention to weather predictions.” He added that wearing life jackets greatly increased chances of survival.
Emergency response teams from several jurisdictions, including North Tahoe Fire, California State Parks, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Coast Guard, conducted thorough search and rescue operations.
Authorities emphasized the need for vigilance regarding weather conditions, the importance of life jackets, and proper float planning. “Weather in the Tahoe Basin can be unpredictable and change rapidly,” Smith cautioned. “Mariners should be cautious when wind and small craft advisories are in effect.”
Six bodies were recovered on the day of the incident; the final two were discovered in the following days, with the last recovery completed by Monday afternoon.
In a statement, Doordash expressed sorrow over the loss of Joshua Pickles, calling him a “cherished colleague and dear friend.” His wife, Jordan Sugar Carlsgaard, said while she was home with their seven-month-old daughter, “Our focus is on those who tragically lost their lives and the survivors of this unexpected storm on Lake Tahoe.”
