Eight people rescued from a sinking boat in rough seas near Miami-Dade

The skies above the water turned tense on Saturday as sailors were pulled to safety from turbulent seas near southern Florida.

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) acted on a distress signal received at 1:42 PM ET in Miami-Dade County, working alongside a local fire department. As noted in a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) Instagram update, eight individuals were in need of help while caught in rough waters with dwindling fuel supplies.

Firefighters launched their vessel, Fireship 21, about ten miles offshore, capturing real-time rescues on film.

The footage shows the choppy waters where first responders assisted the passengers, all of whom were safely returned to shore without any reported injuries.

The MDFR post urged boaters to stay informed about weather conditions prior to venturing out, noting the importance of having a float plan, tuning the VHF radio to channel 16, and signaling for help during emergencies.

In a reminder, the USCG reported 3,844 incidents in 2023 alone, resulting in 564 fatalities from recreational boating accidents. They recommend checking the weather, swells, and tide conditions before heading out.

Boat operators should also carry Coast Guard-approved life jackets and regularly use marine radios while refraining from alcohol consumption while on the water.
