An investigation began early Friday after eight inmates escaped from a prison in northeastern Louisiana, including three who are facing murder charges. Louisiana State Police reported that this group of individuals, characterized as “violent criminals,” was discovered missing from the Riverbend Detention Center around 1:20 a.m. local time.
Among those still unaccounted for are Destin Brogan, 22, alongside five others: Kellyn Rooney, 21; Krisian Salinas, 21; Kevin Slaughter, 25; and Kopleron Vicknair, 19. The authorities have captured three escapees: Hugo Molino, 27; Trenton Taplin, 29; and Savon Wheeler, 31.
The Louisiana Attorney General, Liz Murrill, stated she has been in contact with local officials, including the East Carroll Parish Sheriff and the president of the Louisiana Sheriff’s Association. She emphasized her office’s readiness to assist, specifically through the Fugitive Apprehension Unit, as the situation is actively monitored.
The East Carroll Parish Sheriff’s Office has requested that the Louisiana State Police Monroe Field Investigation Unit take charge of the search for the fugitives. While the sheriff’s personnel previously handled the search, the state police will now lead the inquiry.
State police have warned the public not to engage with the escapees. They urge anyone with information regarding their location to contact law enforcement. As of now, the manner of their escape remains unclear, and no further details have been released.
Reports indicate that Taplin faces serious charges, including first-degree murder and attempted murder, while Brogan and Rooney are charged with second-degree murder. Additionally, Vicknair is awaiting sentencing for a murder charge from 2023. Updates will follow as this story develops.
