Democrats Break Losing Streak in Miami Mayoral Race

After nearly three decades, the Democrats have finally turned a corner in Miami, Florida, often dubbed the “Gateway to Latin America.” Eileen Higgins, a former county commissioner, triumphed over Republican Emilio Gonzalez, who previously served as city manager, in the city’s mayoral runoff election.

This election has garnered significant attention, with both political parties investing heavily in the outcome. Despite being a bipartisan event, it represents yet another chapter in this year’s ongoing political battles between Democrats and Republicans.

President Donald Trump publicly supported Gonzalez, emphasizing on social media the importance of the election, urging voters to back the Republican candidate.

The National Spotlight on Miami

Support from the Florida Republican Party for Gonzalez has been substantial. In the meantime, Democrats were energized by recent victories—including gains in the 2025 elections and double-digit wins in special elections in Tennessee. The Democratic National Committee, recognizing the potential impact of the Miami race, directed resources and attention towards it.

DNC Chairman Kent Martin expressed that following the Democratic successes in Tennessee, the party’s focus shifted significantly toward the Miami mayoral runoff, indicating a high level of cooperation with Higgins’ campaign.

Once a premier battleground state, Florida’s political landscape has shifted rightward over the past decade. Governor Ron DeSantis won re-election in 2022 by a margin of nearly 20 points, and Trump carried the state last year by 13 points. Yet, Miami stands out as a unique Democratic stronghold in an otherwise Republican-leaning state, with Trump narrowly losing the city while securing a more decisive victory in the greater Miami-Dade County area.

Insights from the 2025 Election

Higgins, noted for her background as a Belizean mechanical engineer and former Peace Corps director, campaigned on issues of affordability and the efficiency of local government operations. Conversely, Gonzalez highlighted his plans to combat overdevelopment and proposed the elimination of property taxes on primary residences.

In the initial round of voting on November 4, Higgins garnered 36% while Gonzalez received 19%, leading to the runoff since no candidate surpassed the necessary 50% threshold. Higgins is set to take over from term-limited Republican Mayor Francis Suarez, who previously gained national attention for his short-lived presidential campaign.
