El Chapo's son prepares to plead guilty in U.S. court

Son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán to Plead Guilty

The son of infamous drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán is gearing up to plead guilty in a U.S. federal court. This unexpected twist could potentially disrupt an alliance between cartels and reveal connections to the political elite in Mexico. Joaquín “El Moreno” Guzmán López, arrested in 2024 during a plot against Sinaloa cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, is likely to work with U.S. authorities, which could expose critical cartel secrets.

Recent court filings indicate that Guzmán López has a hearing scheduled with U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman in the Northern District of Illinois on Monday morning, part of an ongoing federal case. The filing confirms that this hearing will focus on a “change of argument,” suggesting that a guilty plea on multiple charges is imminent.

As reported by Breitbart Texas, Guzmán López was detained alongside Zambada in July 2024 at an airstrip near El Paso. Despite rising tensions between their families, Guzmán and Zambada were initially seen as partners in managing the Sinaloa cartel.

His arrest stemmed from a scheme where El Chapo’s son successfully lured Zambada to an event. Once there, Guzmán López’s armed men overpowered Zambada and transported him via plane to U.S. law enforcement awaiting nearby.

This act of betrayal has ignited a violent turf war, causing the Sinaloa Cartel to fragment into two competing factions, engaged in ongoing conflict.

Guzmán López’s anticipated plea could compel him to disclose sensitive information regarding Mexico’s influential political figures, who have been key allies to the Sinaloa cartel.
