Flight Suspension at El Paso International Airport
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced a suspension of all flights to and from El Paso International Airport in Texas, effective for ten days starting from 11:30 PM MST on February 10 until 11:30 PM MST on February 20. This includes commercial, cargo, and general aviation flights.
The FAA cited “special safety reasons” for the restrictions but didn’t elaborate on the specifics. Notably, the no-fly zone extends over the airspace surrounding El Paso and Santa Teresa, New Mexico.
Within this restricted airspace, the FAA has labeled it “national defense airspace,” indicating that it reserves the right to use deadly force against any aircraft that may threaten security.
In a related announcement, El Paso Airport confirmed the closure and advised travelers to check with their airlines for updates on flight statuses.
This recent suspension comes shortly after several airlines halted flights to Cuba, following warnings that the island is experiencing a jet fuel shortage. This situation ties back to President Donald Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on countries supplying oil to Cuba.
At least three prominent Canadian airlines, including Air Canada, have announced that aviation fuel will be unavailable at airports starting this week. Other airlines, such as WestJet and Air Transat, have also canceled flights due to anticipated fuel shortages.
Cuban officials reported that aviation fuel will not be available at airports for at least a month, continuing until March 11, as increased economic pressure from the U.S. targets Cuba’s oil suppliers. A White House official commented that Cuban leaders need to work towards an agreement with the United States to alleviate the rising economic pressures facing the country.
This official also mentioned that Cuba is diplomatically isolated, especially as key oil suppliers like Venezuela and Mexico have reduced their support.
In light of these developments, all three Canadian airlines announced similar measures on Monday, stating they would focus on repatriating customers currently in Cuba over the coming days.
This is an evolving story, so updates may follow as more information becomes available.
