Elderly man facing murder charges after stabbing wife in the back over pancakes: police

An elderly Washington, D.C., man is facing murder charges after allegedly stabbing his wife in the back during an argument over pancakes.

Stephen Schwartz, 85, was arrested Dec. 10 at his home in the 1300 block of Corcoran Street NW by law enforcement officers responding to a report of a stabbing.

“Upon arrival, officers found an injured female inside the apartment,” the Metropolitan Police Department said in a report.

Suspect is in custody after stealing a Salvation Army truck providing aid to people in need in Washington, D.C.

“A male was also found inside the residence suffering from self-inflicted injuries,” the report continued. “Both were transported to a local hospital for treatment, where the woman died.”

Police said the scene investigation yielded enough evidence to arrest Schwartz on suspicion of second-degree murder while armed.

The defendant was tried in the District of Columbia Superior Court and pleaded not guilty.

A report released by U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves states that Schwartz “didn't want to eat pancakes.” [the victim] I made one and stabbed her in the back. ”

Schwartz told police he had been married to the victim, 81-year-old Sharon Schwartz, for 40 years and that he loved her, NBC reported, citing court documents.

According to the same document, he reportedly expressed regret over the tragic incident and said he wished he had died.

Judge Sherry Trafford ruled that there was probable cause to connect Schwartz to the crime, and he was sentenced to be held without bail pending a preliminary hearing scheduled for January 2.
