The New York Court of Appeals has broken laws that allow non-citizens to vote in New York City elections, including Mayor Race.
Above Thursdaythe state's highest court held that a law allowing more than 800,000 green cardholders to vote in local elections violated the state constitution.
“It is my hope that left lawmakers will stop pushing these unconstitutional and reckless measures that dilute the voices of American citizens.”
The city council passed a controversial law in 2021 under former mayor Bill de Blasio (D).
Democrat supporters of the law Discussed Non-citizens should be able to vote because they contribute to members of the tax-paying community. However, most progressive judges in the High Court disagree, with Prime Minister Rowan Wilson claiming that votes are exclusively for citizens.
“Under that interpretation, local governments are free to enact laws that allow anyone to vote… including 13-year-old children,” Wilson wrote on behalf of the majority. “It's obvious from the languages and restrictions contained in [the state constitution] That “citizen” means not as a floor, but as a condition of voter eligibility: the franchise is extended only to citizens whose voting rights are established by appropriate evidence. ”
The court closed the door on the issue and declared, “Whatever the future is, today's New York Constitution draws a solid line restricting votes to citizens.”
“We're going to have some spreading lawsuits,” said Joe Borelli, a former Republican minority leader on the city council and one of the plaintiffs in the case.
“This was an open shut case from the start,” he said.

“We are delighted that we won the final round in court and have completely stopped New York City's non-citizen voting law!” I wrote it X. “The Court of Appeals, the state's Supreme Court, sided with us and two lower courts to break this unconstitutional law.”
Mario Takis said, “There is nothing more important than maintaining the integrity of our electoral system. In today's age, governments should work to generate more trust in elections. The right to vote is a sacred right that is only given to American citizens.
Elon Musk commented on the High Court's decision. Statement The ruling does not “exactly kill” the Democratic plan, as New York City has not yet requested identification to vote.
“So they'll continue to use non-citizen votes illegally now,” Musk said. “But that would be difficult.”
