*** Election Night Livewire *** Trump-Backed Bernie Moreno Seeks to Crush Establishment GOP in Ohio

Former President Donald Trump has already secured the Republican nomination for this year’s presidential election, but Bernie Moreno, a businessman and political outsider, is a far more popular candidate for the U.S. Senate seat in Ohio. He faces an important test of his strength within the Republican Party. Senator Matt Dolan and Secretary of State Frank LaRose are establishment Republican candidates.

Moreno has campaigned against the deportation of undocumented immigrants who entered the country during the administration of Democrat Joe Biden, and against sending more U.S. tax dollars overseas that Ukrainians waste on the war against Russia. Mr. Dolan, on the other hand, is a member of the globalist establishment Republican who supports increased aid to Ukraine, and Mr. LaRose received cash from Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg to campaign in Ohio, and is the founder of LinkedIn. He has been accused of receiving funds from left-wing sources, including from Reid Hoffman.

Mr. Moreno fought off vicious media attacks by the Associated Press in the final stages of the campaign, but Mr. Trump confronted him at a large rally in Dayton, Ohio, on Saturday. Whoever wins this race could decide a lot about the future of the Republican Party and how it goes from here.

Other states have had some notable primaries as well, with two different incumbents, one Republican and one Democratic, facing stiff challenges in Illinois. Rep. Mike Bost (R-Ill.) tries to fend off conservative challenger Darren Bailey, while 82-year-old longtime Democratic Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.) faces two He is facing a serious challenger.

In California, voters will also vote in a special election to choose a successor to former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in the Bakersfield-area House seat. Other states, including Florida, will hold presidential primaries on Tuesday, but Trump and Biden will lock down the majority of delegates ahead of this summer’s conventions as Republican and Democratic primaries are decided. As such, these are essentially perfunctory primaries. However, there are interesting data points that can be gleaned from turnout, vote totals, and demographics that could provide clues as to what will happen in the November general election.

Voting in Ohio ends at 7:30 p.m. ET, and later in other states. For live nightly results, breaking news and analysis, visit Breitbart News here.

Although essentially irrelevant since Trump is already the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, the results currently coming out of Florida appear to be very strong for Trump. He’s over 70 percent and looks like he could do as well as about 90 percent. Nikki Haley dropped out two weeks ago and was the last Republican candidate to run against Trump more than a month ago, but she and several others who dropped out earlier remain in the Sunshine State. With his name on the ballot, Trump’s superior performance is clear. impressive.

Approximately 230,000 early votes were cast in Ohio, both in person and by mail. Mr. Dolan will do well with those numbers, but Mr. Moreno is expected to clean up his election day totals. So the night might start out as some sort of pro-establishment mirage, with Dolan seeming strong at first but disappearing during the night. Margins matter in races like this, and the question is whether Moreno can improve his score in key areas.
