US Open Highlights American Tennis Comeback

Elena Rybakina moved closer to achieving a career Grand Slam on Saturday by defeating Aryna Sabalenka with scores of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, thus clinching her first U.S. Open title.

Not only did Rybakina secure the championship, but she was also set to replace Sabalenka as the world No. 1 in women’s tennis rankings next week. This victory not only marked a personal milestone for Rybakina but, in a sense, signified a shift in dominance as she took the title that Sabalenka had held for the past two years.

After the match, Rybakina reflected on her win. “It’s tough to find words right now, honestly,” she shared. “I didn’t expect anything like this coming into the tournament. I’ve been dealing with a bit of an injury, but somehow everything aligned on my side.”

Earlier in the year, Rybakina had triumphed at the Australian Open, overcoming Sabalenka on a hard court in Melbourne.

Sabalenka arrived at the final boasting a 19-match winning streak at the U.S. Open; her last loss had been to Coco Gauff in 2023. She was aiming to join the ranks of Serena Williams, who was the last player to win three consecutive titles at this venue from 2012 to 2014.

“I really felt at home here and cannot wait to come back next year,” Sabalenka said. “I wish I could have performed a little better, but there’s always next year.”

Interestingly, this final marked only the third U.S. Open women’s championship since 2000 to feature the top two seeds competing against each other. The previous two involved Serena Williams, who emerged victorious against her sister Venus in 2002 and Victoria Azarenka in 2013.

Looking ahead, Rybakina, born in Russia but representing Kazakhstan, had previously secured her first major title at Wimbledon in 2022. Should she win at the French Open, she would achieve a career Grand Slam.

It’s worth noting that Rybakina did experience a moment of frustration when she pulled a backhand wide at a critical moment in the opening game of the third set, but she quickly regained her focus and took control of the match.

On the men’s side, American Ben Shelton is set to face Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the final on Sunday.
