John Harbaugh’s Impact on the Giants

New York Giants fans might have overlooked the significance of the Eli Manning and Tom Coughlin era. From November 21, 2004, to January 3, 2016, they were the only quarterback and head coach the team had. Since then, there have been 17 different games, including five just this season.

These days, the Giants organization looks rather different, and Eli Manning believes that hiring John Harbaugh could help set the franchise back on the right track. “It couldn’t have gone any better,” Manning shared in a recent interview. “We knew the Giants needed a new coach—someone with prior head coaching experience who understands how to handle the media in New York.” Yet, that ideal candidate always seemed elusive.

Then there’s Harbaugh, a fantastic choice with significant success in the NFL. “I’m thrilled for him,” Manning continued. “I’ve talked with him about this opportunity, and I believe he’s going to do an outstanding job reviving the Giants.”

Owner John Mara has faced a lot of criticism regarding the team’s ongoing struggles, which many trace back to Manning’s tenure. His streak ended in 2017 when he was benched for Geno Smith, which was a tough moment for fans. A year later, after a dismal 3-13 season, the Giants opted for Saquon Barkley over several potential standout quarterbacks in hopes of giving Manning another shot at a championship. During this period, decisions from hiring general managers to various coaches drew scrutiny, particularly after neglecting domestic violence allegations against former kicker John Brown and watching several draft picks fail to live up to expectations.

Yet, despite past mistakes, there’s no one who desires success for the Giants more than Mara, and Manning recognizes that. “That’s why I wanted to join this franchise over 20 years ago—due to their commitment to winning championships,” Manning stated. “Everyone in the organization focuses on building a great team.” He emphasized how the Maras and the Tisch family are genuinely invested in crafting quality results.

Since their Super Bowl victory in 2011, the Giants have only made the playoffs twice and won just once. Clearly, the culture in East Rutherford has faded, and winning often stems from a strong organizational culture. But Manning truly believes that Harbaugh can restore that sense of purpose.

As Manning noted, “At the end of the day, it’s all about belief. It’s not just the key players; everyone in the building needs to trust that what they’re creating is the right thing.” He stressed the importance of accountability and maintaining high standards. Good organizational habits are crucial—like practicing well and having a solid offseason plan. Manning reckons that when everyone feels connected, even tough times can be overcome. “It shouldn’t be easy; it’s meant to be challenging. That’s what gears you up for tough situations throughout the games and the season,” he remarked.
