Dr. Siegel Shares Insights from His Book ‘The Angels Among Us’

The rookie from Notre Dame and his wife, Anna Raridon, shared on Tuesday that they have tragically lost their baby boy due to anencephaly, a severe birth defect that prevents the forebrain and cerebrum from developing correctly.
Currently, there is no standard treatment for anencephaly. Sadly, around 75% of pregnancies affected by this defect result in stillbirth, and babies that do survive birth typically only live for a few hours or days.
It’s heart-wrenching.

Anna shared on her Instagram that during their 20-week anatomy scan, filled with anticipation to see their baby, their lives were changed forever as they learned of the anencephaly diagnosis.
“While we are absolutely devastated that we were unable to bring our baby boy home, I am grateful to have loved him deeply, kept him safe, and had been his home for the past 9 months before he was called back to Heaven,” she wrote.
Rather than becoming lost in sorrow, Anna chose to embrace her faith during this difficult time.
“I have often found it easy to glorify the Lord when life is going well,” she said, “but it is in our deepest trials that we are drawn closest to Him. We may never understand the why behind this journey, but one thing we know with certainty is that God promises to care for His children.”
She believes their son was lovingly created by God and was deeply cherished by their family and friends, even if his time on Earth was brief. Anna reflected on his life, noting it was meaningful and part of their narrative.
The couple expressed an emotional message for their baby: “I have loved you every second of your life and will miss you every second of mine. What a sweet sweet reunion ours will be🤍”
Statistical data indicates that approximately 1 in every 4,762 births results in anencephaly, translating to about 0.02% of live births.
While this defect is rare, it carries a personal significance. The research notes that the recurrence rate for this condition rises significantly to between 2%-5% in subsequent pregnancies.
This means that, though there is a high chance—95%-98%—that the Raridons may not face this condition again, the uncertainty must be difficult to navigate.
In coping with their loss, Anna shared some comforting Scriptures, offering both solace and hope during this difficult period. She quoted from 1 Peter 1:5-7, highlighting the protection faith provides during trials, and from James 1:2-4, emphasizing the idea that challenges can lead to growth and completeness.
