Eliminating the Pentagon’s think tank is a senseless mistake

Last week, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses order Pentagon's “Disaster” Office of pure evaluation “Developing a plan that will be restructured in line with the strategic priorities of the sector.” The staff will be reassigned to “Mission Critical Roles.”

Even by Hegseth's conflicting and symbolic standards, this is a narrow-minded, revengeful act of self-harm.

The Net Assessment Bureau was established in 1973 during the presidency of Richard Nixon, assessed the capabilities and readiness of the US military and predicted threats and scenarios that could emerge over a long period of 20-30 years. It was effectively designed to be a think tank for the Pentagon by Secretary of Defense James Schlesinger, who chose a prominent Land Corporation strategist. Andrew Marshall As the first director. Marshall continued to work until 2015 and retired at the age of 93.

Killing the office of net assessment is part of Hegseth's intentionally confrontational and destructive approach. During his confirmation hearing, he It is listed His job was to “return warrior culture back to the Department of Defense,” and “focusing on the Pentagon laser, focusing on combat, lethality, meritocracy, standards and preparation.”

The “warrior spirit” is central to Hegses' concept of military forces. His supporters emphasize that Hegses will serve the National Guard in Iraq and Afghanistan, earning two bronze stars and ascending into the rank of Major. His detractors point out that with equal accuracy, many of his active duty protect Guantanamo Bay detainees, address civil matters, teach them to suppress the rebellion, and that he has never held the position of senior commander. He is light on international norms, senior military and civilian leaders, and what is not connected to the forefront of military movements soon.

The long-term strategic thinking carried out by the Net Assessment Bureau is an important part of sustainable and effective defense policies. The office was created to refute the perennial accusation popularized by Winston Churchill, that “war offices are always preparing for the final war.” The Pentagon desperately needs the ongoing work of critical thinkers to imagine how wars will change and where conflicts will arise.

Many described the Net Assessment Bureau as “the office that won the Cold War.” As director, Marshall recognized that the Soviet Union was weaker than many would expect, and that America's resolve could lead to collapse. He also understood the new threats from China when wars in Iraq and Afghanistan consumed the attention of defence facilities.

The UK Department of Defense has tried to emulate this important role of the Marshall, if late. 2020, Secretary of Defense Ben Wallace announcement Establishment of the Secretary of State's office for net evaluation and challenge. It was intended to “suggest our own unpleasant questions and…learn from conflict – from both reality and predictions.

Why is Hegseth sacrificing such capacity? The official Pentagon announcement included information that “ensures that our resources are focused on the most pressing national security challenges.” Infiltrated by Trump Musk's assumption that spending without obvious and immediate output is likely a wasteful bureaucratic feather bedding, Hegses doesn't value the role of the office. It has been Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the longtime enemy of the office. Celebrated A move to save $20 million. pentagon 2024 Budget It was $841 billion.

Hegseth proves he has no interest in the battlefield and geopolitical context of 2050. There's another, more personal game where retaliation takes place. Department of Defense's rapid response social media accounts praise “Offices linked to rumors of Russian conspiracy” are closed. There are a few Trump-friendly journalists reference Funding from the office of FBI informant Stephen Halper in an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

This is characteristic of this administration to resolve scores and recreate Trump history. The narrow accusations of conspiracy with Russia have not been proven, but special advisor Robert Mueller 2019 Report “Dramatic and systematic” Russian interference was found in the 2016 election. But for Maga, it is still just a “hoologue.”

The Net Assessment Bureau was tangentially connected (though much of the funds it gave was even before Trump was even a candidate). Therefore, it became a target. As a bureaucratic and inevitably secret organization, it was simple meat.

With reduced strategic thinking and horizon scanning, America is not very prepared for future conflicts. They cannot predict their nature and the type of military they require. The demolition of Hegseth's office is a combination of Trump's revenge, the reflexive aversion of the department he oversees, and a lack of interest or understanding of military strategy and preparation.

This is not surprising. It may have been foreseen from the moment he nominated. The most malignant effect is not bitten for several years, by which time Hegus and Trump are shuffled from the stage. This is another element of a toxic, stupid and avoidable heritage.
