Elise Stefanik Launches Campaign for New York Governor

Representative Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), who previously chaired the House Republican Conference, officially kicked off her campaign for governor of New York on Friday. She framed her bid as a critical effort to rescue the state from what she describes as economic decline and failures in public safety under Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul.

In a campaign video released that morning, Stefanik depicted New York as a state in distress, citing exorbitant taxes, rising utility and food prices, along with escalating crime rates as urgent issues demanding effective leadership. The video opens with a blunt declaration: “The Empire State has collapsed,” while the narrator speaks of a “price crisis” and dwindling tax revenue.

Stefanik’s announcement spotlighted her intent to appeal across party lines, asserting that her campaign would bring together Democrats, Republicans, and independents to pivot the state towards a better future. “I’m running for governor to make New York affordable and safe for everyone. Now is the time to fire Hochul and save New York,” she conveyed on social media.

Her campaign messages take aim at Hochul’s partnership with progressive factions within the state and criticize her backing of new policies from New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, a self-identified democratic socialist who has faced nationwide backlash for his stance on issues like policing and taxation. Stefanik’s ad labels Mamdani as “an anti-Semitic communist” who allegedly is against raising police funding and accuses Hochul of succumbing to extreme leftist pressure.

Stefanik reported early campaign success on social media, noting that, “In just a few hours, we’ve raised over $1 million for our campaign and @NewYorkGOP,” alongside her launch ad that garnered over a million views.

The announcement follows several months of speculation, with polls indicating growing support for Stefanik statewide. A recent Manhattan Institute poll revealed a statistical tie favoring Stefanik, with Hochul at 43 percent and Stefanik slightly behind at 42 percent among registered voters. Notably, the same survey showed Stefanik ahead of Vice Governor Antonio Delgado by six points.

The campaign video highlights New York’s struggles with crime and immigration, suggesting that “foreign gang members terrorize innocent New Yorkers,” a situation Stefanik attributes to “sanctuary state policies.” She criticized Hochul’s one-party Democratic dominance for making New York the least economically favorable state in the nation.

In response, Stefanik’s narrative points to her previous legislative successes, claiming credit for enacting “the largest middle-class tax cut in New York history,” supporting law enforcement, advocating for small businesses, and committing to reducing utility and grocery costs.

So far, she has garnered endorsements and support from various individuals as she positions herself as a key national figure, particularly after a notable confrontation with a university president over anti-Semitism on campus. Her upcoming book discusses what she calls “academic and moral corruption” in higher education, furthering her critique of progressive institutions.
