Controversy Surrounds Foodie TikToker’s Use of Recording Glasses

A popular TikTok foodie who explores New York City has sparked a debate by using discreet recording glasses to capture her experiences. Critics are labeling the glasses as “hypocritical” and “creepy.”

The 22-year-old behind the account “Elizabeth Eats NYC” has responded to the backlash, urging people to “drop your high horse and enjoy the show.” She noted that holding a camera isn’t practical for her since she’s always on the move and engages with people directly. “My glasses allow me to take pictures without the hassle of a big, annoying camera,” she explained, mentioning that her identity was not fully disclosed.

Retailing at $380, the glasses have become integral to her content creation strategy. Elizabeth, who has shared that she experiences hand tremors, initially began her account with personal photos but quickly shifted to a more comedic approach and gained millions of followers within weeks.

She explained that, despite criticisms, her intention is to maintain “peace and privacy.” Having observed the experiences of other food influencers, she made the decision to keep her identity concealed in order to live a more ordinary life.

Social media users have been vocal, calling her use of the glasses “hypocritical,” as she captures moments without others’ consent. Some have accused her of ambushing people and exploiting them for content.

In her defense, Elizabeth argued that the subjects in her videos generally do not have significant followings. “A 10-second clip of an unknown person is quite different from my 10-second clip, which often holds more significance,” she said. She also pointed out that filming people in public has been common practice since cameras were invented.

“My glasses feature a flashing light to indicate when recording is happening, so anyone in my videos should be aware,” she added, mentioning that she respects requests from individuals who prefer not to be filmed.

Despite her intentions, not everyone is thrilled. Tom Wong, the owner of Chubby Crab, mentioned that he would have preferred not to be recorded when Elizabeth visited his restaurant. Although he initially expressed his discomfort, he later acknowledged her impact. “I’m really shy and haven’t posted on social media in over a year,” he admitted, but also noted, “the glasses are part of her success… I only have good things to say about her now.”
