Today, I’m on the road sharing some Sunday reflections from a family wedding. Interestingly, it seems like some folks missed the memo that Memorial Day weekend kind of kicks off summer.

It’s a bit chilly this morning—not quite the 80 degrees we might expect. But hey, Elizabeth Hurley definitely got the summer memo. Even at 60, she’s as ready as ever for that summer vibe.

On Saturday, the longtime advocate for warm weather and beach days rolled out the welcome mat for Outkick Culture Club—which is pretty excited about this time of year. She was out by the pool, fully embracing the season and, of course, in promotional mode. Not too surprising; that’s pretty standard for actresses and models as summer approaches.

And here we are, kicking off Memorial Day weekend. There’s email to check, baseball to watch, barbecue to enjoy, and even a shoutout to hockey goalie Mikayla Demeiter.

Mike T? Message from San Diego is off

– Tim R writes:

Sean,

I just wrapped up the screencaps and Mike T’s insights from Thursday, May 21st. He mentioned, “San Diego doesn’t have college summer baseball. Southern California probably doesn’t either.” That’s not quite right. My son had two fantastic summers playing for the San Diego Waves, a solid team in the Western Baseball Association, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2025. They regularly compete in the WBC World Series, a 32-team tournament that’s been a thing since 1935. If you’re into baseball, you should check it out.

Sean, thanks for the great effort.

Thanks for your support! I think you meant Jim T, not Mike. Honestly, I’m not super familiar with the San Diego collegiate summer scene, so I’ll let him handle that.

Thanks for reaching out. By our discussion’s end, I’m sure we’ll all learn a bit more about the San Diego summer baseball landscape.

Chimney starter cube

Sean,

I’m here to help. Bear and the Philadelphia guys host a fierce barbecue contest, and we swear by this method. Just light a cube under the chimney and be patient. When the coals glow orange, you know it’s time. It’s easy and tastes great. Enjoy!

Charcoal lighter issues

To Jim T. in San Diego, I saw your charcoal lighter dilemma at a barbecue tournament.

Page et al.

– E. Joe from TN writes:

Sean,

Michael R. really ought to stop claiming to represent golfers outside his group, who just argue post-round about who’s catching and who’s throwing. Those guys want Page out. Sexual golf? Shame…

On a different note:

I loved that photo of Trotter (oops, Jim T from SD) from PLNU. As a kid, I used to bike there and even climbed a steep hill behind the left field fence, where I collected around 24 home run balls. If you look near the second palm tree from the right, you might see a spot that holds special meaning for my wife and me, as we remarried there about 13 years ago on our 24th anniversary.

Great job covering for Joe; you’ve obviously been keeping up.

Thanks for the kind words; I appreciate it!

There are no animals here

And you’re what Native Americans might refer to as a “not-so-smart” type, or one who “runs with scissors.”

Thanks, Jack. I’ll take that as a compliment!

For those curious, Jack made a joke about Selena Gomez potentially joining a high-profile cast in an adult film that’s supposedly a work of art. I had written: “Don’t believe the buzz about Selena starring in an adult film; this isn’t just some amateur video.”

In fact, it’s not a sex tape. It’s for those who seem a bit lost. If that resonates with you, well, congratulations—you might be adventurous.

Baseball and meat

– Jim T. from San Diego writes:

I went to see the NCAA Division II game at Point Loma Nazarene University against Northwest Nazarene from Idaho. PLNU swept the series and will head to Cary, North Carolina for the College World Series. The day was perfect for a baseball outing.

Another pic shows the pop-up grill at Saber Catering (not sponsored) where they served up quarter-pound burgers and hot dogs. Totally worth it—even if I did end up with some burger stains on my shirt.

Meanwhile, my friend was checking in on the San Diego State University game from the Mountain West Conference tournament. Our Aztecs won again, putting them in a solid spot to advance!

In San Marcos, we’re ranking third in the nation for Division II Women’s Softball. We bounced back from a tough loss earlier and are heading to Chattanooga for the World Series!

And on the downtown waterfront, the Padres are going after the A’s.

San Diego boasts four incredible ballparks: Petco, Tony Gwynn Stadium at SDSU, Fowler Park at USD, and Carol B. Land Field at Point Loma, where you can watch surfers and yachts between innings without leaving your seat.

San Diego truly could be one of the jewels of baseball.

On Monday, I’ll be joining a Cub Scout pack to visit a cemetery in honor of our fallen heroes. A nice way to start summer!

You can’t beat baseball and meat. It’s springtime. It’s summertime. That’s the life! I treasure all the latest baseball news. It has my heart. Keep the updates coming!

That’s it for this Sunday. I hope everyone enjoys the summer kickoff. Light that grill and send the food my way—I want to see it!

Big thanks to everyone who reached out. Enjoy the day!
