Elizabeth Warren Rebuts CNBC Host Who Compared Her to Trump

Warren Defends Her Stance on Federal Reserve Amid Trump Comparisons

Senator Elizabeth Warren expressed clear frustration during an appearance on CNBC when a host drew parallels between her and former President Donald Trump. The discussion, which took place on “Squawk on the Streets,” centered around Kevin Warsh, Trump’s nominee for the Federal Reserve chair position. Warren stated that Warsh is not fit for the role largely due to his alignment with Trump’s viewpoints.

Host Sarah Eisen noted Warren’s previous endorsements for Fed candidates who shared her policy perspectives, pointing out that this isn’t entirely different from how a president might express preference for certain policies. “You’ve been vocal about what you believe the Fed should do,” she said, referencing her support for Lael Brainard and Janet Yellen, both of whom agreed with her on various issues.

“Is that really the case?” Warren responded, emphasizing her approach as individual opinion grounded in facts rather than a means of exerting control. She contended that Trump’s influence is different, arguing, “Trump is trying to manage the Fed. We both know that, and his method is somewhat terrifying.”

Warren endorsed Brainard and Yellen, both nominated by former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, for positions on the Federal Reserve Board. She accused Trump of attempting to manipulate the Fed, specifically criticizing an investigation into current Chairman Jerome Powell over allegations related to misleading testimony about expensive renovations at the Fed’s facilities.

During a Senate Banking Committee confirmation hearing for Warsh, she quizzed him on areas of disagreement with Trump, which led to a sarcastic response from Warsh that seemed to annoy her. “What aspect of Trump’s economic policies do you disagree with?” Warren pressed.

Warsh humorously replied, mentioning he might look different if he were “the lead character.” Warren’s response was to urge for an independent Fed chair, reiterating the necessity of courage and independence in that role. “If you can’t respond to these questions, you lack the needed qualities,” she said.

Throughout the hearing, Warsh asserted the significance of the Federal Reserve’s independence, denying any subservience to Trump, and insisting that he would not follow presidential directives.
