Elle Duncan stands by her crude WNBA All-Star Game joke despite criticism

ESPN Anchor Comments Draw Mixed Reactions During WNBA All-Star Game

During the WNBA All-Star Game broadcast, ESPN anchor Elle Duncan faced significant backlash for remarks made during halftime. She commented on the first half’s impressive scoring, mentioning that Nafisa Collier’s team scored 82 points compared to Caitlyn Clark’s 60. Duncan said, “I hope there’s a bit more competition,” and then made a questionable analogy about a “girl’s trip to Cancun.”

ESPN analyst Chiney Ogwumike quickly interjected, saying, “Elle, you’re timed out. You’re done,” right before the broadcast cut to commercials.

Despite the negative feedback on social media, Duncan stood by her comments. In a later appearance on “The Dan Le Batard Show,” she defended herself, saying, “My feelings with Cancun jokes feel like a reintroduction to anyone who doesn’t know clearly about me or my work.” She felt compelled to remind the audience about her personality and humor.

Duncan shared her thoughts on the mixed reactions, suggesting some found it amusing while others were offended. “I thought it was ridiculous. I thought it was funny. Some people definitely agree, but that’s just how it is,” she remarked.

Further addressing her remarks, she reflected humorously on concerns raised by viewers about how to explain these comments to their kids. “If you have to tell your child about the term I used, I can help you have that conversation,” she said, expressing disbelief at the outrage.

Her comments sparked a variety of reactions on social media, with some users denouncing the remarks. One user tweeted that this incident contributes to why no one takes the WNBA or ESPN seriously. Meanwhile, others compared the situation, suggesting that if a comedian made a similar joke, it would have been met with severe backlash.

As the second half of the game resumed, Collier’s team continued to dominate, ultimately winning the All-Star Game with a score of 151-131.
