Ellen Burstyn Discusses Secrets to Longevity at 93

Ellen Burstyn recently shared insights about her longevity during an appearance on Rob Lowe’s podcast. The actress, who has just released a new book titled “Poetry Says It Better: Poems to Help You Wake Up,” reflected on her lifestyle changes that have contributed to her health into her 90s.

In her own words, “I don’t drink alcohol. I don’t smoke anymore, and I don’t use marijuana anymore.” She emphasized her commitment to a healthy way of living, having adopted a plant-based diet and engaging in regular exercise. “I walk my dog several times a week—almost every morning—and also work out with a trainer at the gym,” she added.

Continuing, Burstyn stated, “So I’m living a healthy lifestyle and it’s really paying off.” She expressed how important it is to stay active, specifically mentioning her daily workouts and her enjoyment of walking in New York City’s Central Park. “This is how you can still be active at 93 years old,” she told the hosts of the show, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos.

Previously, Burstyn had discussed her health choices with her “Law & Order: Organized Crime” co-star Christopher Meloni. During that conversation, she cited eating well, opting for vegetarianism, and avoiding substances like alcohol and tobacco as key decisions she made after years of less healthy habits.

She also mentioned that keeping her mind sharp is vital to her well-being. Burstyn stays engaged by reading, being creative, and maintaining a social life. Interestingly, she reflected on age discrimination in Hollywood, questioning whether it was a myth since she finds herself busier than ever at nearly 91. “I’ve been busier than I can remember at any point in my career,” she remarked.

When it comes to aging, she shared her gratitude for life. “I try to make sure the first words out of my mouth are ‘thank you.’ I’m grateful for being alive, safe, healthy, and having my dogs,” she noted, pointing out her appreciation for the simple joys in life.

In “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” Burstyn plays Bernadette “Bernie” Stabler, the mother of Detective Elliot Stabler. Although NBC announced the show’s cancellation after five seasons, Burstyn is set to appear in a forthcoming drama titled “Place To Be,” alongside notable names like Taika Waititi and Pamela Anderson.
