Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi Move to the UK
Ellen DeGeneres has shared that she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, decided to relocate to the UK following Donald Trump’s re-election.
During a conversation with British host Richard Bacon in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, she expressed their feelings about the move. Initially, they planned to stay in the UK for a few months in 2024, but after Trump won against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, they made the decision to stay permanently in November of the previous year.
The couple is now living in a house they purchased in the Cotswolds. DeGeneres recounted, “We came here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from friends, many with crying emojis. Our reaction was, ‘We’re staying here.’
DeGeneres expressed their love for the rural UK lifestyle, including the charm of the landscape and its animals, like horses and chickens. She remarked, “It’s definitely beautiful. We’re not accustomed to such beauty. The villages and architecture are all captivating; it’s just a different way of life.”
She further added, “Everything is good here—the way animals are treated and how polite people are. I genuinely love it.”
Additionally, DeGeneres mentioned that she and de Rossi might consider remarrying in the UK. They originally tied the knot in Los Angeles back in August 2008. She commented on the situation in America, stating, “The Baptist Church is trying to reverse gay marriages, and it feels like a continuous battle. Portia and I have thought about it, and if we decide to, we’ll marry here.”
DeGeneres also expressed her hope for a society where people aren’t afraid to be themselves and are accepted for their differences.
While hinting at a possible return to entertainment, she clarified that it wouldn’t be in the same form as her previous daytime talk show, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” She added, “I’m not quite sure what my next steps will be. I want to have fun and do something, but I like my chickens too—I suppose that makes me a bit dull.”
Recently, DeGeneres and de Rossi sold a beach bungalow in Montecito, California for $5.2 million. DeGeneres has also made some personal changes, recently dyeing her hair brunette and embracing her new farm life in England.
Lastly, she showed support for fellow comedian Rosie O’Donnell, despite their past differences, after Trump threatened to revoke O’Donnell’s citizenship, sharing a screenshot of her praise and writing, “Good for @Rosie.”
