Ellen Pompeo recently shared a personal chat she had with her former Grey’s Anatomy co-star Eric Dane after hearing about his ALS diagnosis.
Speaking openly at the ALS Network Champions for Cure & Care Gala on January 24, the 56-year-old actress recounted the moment she reached out. “As soon as I heard about his diagnosis, I texted him, ‘If you want to talk, I’m here,'” Pompeo shared through a prerecorded message. Just 30 seconds later, she got a call.
She reflected on their conversation, noting, “I’ll help you with whatever you need. But I’ll do whatever I can. I love you.” She expressed pride in Dane and warmth in her feelings for him, stating, “I love you so much and it’s an honor to talk about you today.”
Pompeo also reminisced about her time with Dane, specifically when he joined in Season 2 as Dr. Mark Sloan. “When he appeared as McSteamy, there was this instant electrochemistry. We fell in love with him right away,” she recalled.
Dane, who has been candid about his struggles with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis since revealing his diagnosis in April 2025, had initially planned to attend an event to receive the Advocate of the Year Award. However, he canceled it due to his declining health, as confirmed by the ALS Network.
In September 2025, he was spotted in a wheelchair at an airport in Washington, D.C., where he delivered an emotional message to his concerned fans.
Even with his ongoing health challenges, the father of two has no intention of stepping away from acting. He mentioned in a panel discussion that he might pursue roles focused on ALS because, though limited by his condition, he remains eager to contribute in whatever way he can. “I still have a brain and I still have words,” he affirmed. “I’m willing to do just about anything.”
