Transgender star Elliot Page (formerly actress Ellen Page) narrates a new documentary about gay and transgender animals, the second gay-themed nature documentary to come out in less than a year.
Second Nature The film explores what the filmmakers call “more than 1,500 animal species that engage in same-sex sexual activity, raise young, change gender or form matriarchal societies.” The documentary also “debunks harmful myths about sex and gender.”
According to the documentary’s website, the cast of scientists is made up entirely of “women, BIPOC, queer, and immigrants.” One character in the film is transgender ecologist and evolutionary biologist Dr. Joan Roughgarden.
The site includes links to lesson plans focused on what it calls “gender-inclusive biology” aimed at school-age children.

The documentary has yet to be distributed, but is scheduled to have an advance screening at the Frameline Film Festival, the world’s oldest gay film festival, in San Francisco on June 23.
Elliot Page’s production company is one of the producers of the documentary, along with Megan Ellison’s Annapurna and the Sundance Institute.
NBCUniversal’s Peacock recently launched a documentary series, Breitbart News reported. Queer Planet, It deals with similar themes, focusing on gay and transgender behavior in the animal kingdom.
Queer Planet It is set to premiere on Peacock on June 6th, which coincides with Pride Month.
