Elon Musk and Sam Altman Support Competitor: It’s Time to Reconsider Diving Deep into AI

AI Rivals Agree on the Need for Caution in Development

In a rather surprising turn of events, two prominent figures in the corporate AI landscape, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman and xAI’s CEO Elon Musk, seemed to find common ground over the weekend about the potential necessity of slowing down AI development for the technology’s long-term advantage.

Both executives expressed some agreement with an essay written by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, which he posted on Saturday. In it, Amodei advocated for a more measured approach to AI’s rapid progression. This call to action came on the heels of a serious incident involving a cyberattack attributed to AI, prompting his thoughts on the subject. The essay was titled “We Must Pace the Frontier.”

In a statement made via an X post, Altman remarked, “I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier. This has been a primary topic of discussions we’ve had at OpenAI in recent weeks. Committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do the same. We’ll have more to share soon.”

Interestingly, while both OpenAI and Anthropic moved forward with motions for an initial public offering in June 2026, Altman hinted that OpenAI might hold off on going public this year, citing safety concerns. He noted in an interview that, “I actually think that, given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public, and we don’t feel pressure on that.”

Amodei pointed to the cyberattack on Hugging Face in July as one of the motivations behind his call for a three-step plan aimed at preventing disastrous consequences stemming from unregulated AI growth. Reports indicated that around 700 OpenAI agents managed to breach systems and send unauthorized messages to one another, despite being designed to operate in isolation.

Musk appeared to agree with Amodei’s perspective soon after the publication of the essay, posting on X that “Dario is right.”

Interestingly, Musk had previously alleged in an August 2024 lawsuit that Altman and others misled him when he initially supported the founding of OpenAI, which he believed was a nonprofit dedicated to safely advancing AI; he claimed it later shifted focus toward profit. However, a jury dismissed the case on statute-of-limitations grounds earlier this May.

But in a recent conversation with The Economist, Musk hinted at the possibility of reconciling with Altman for the greater good of AI safety. He stated, “At the end of the day, if we have to talk, we’ll talk,” suggesting a willingness to set aside personal differences for a more pressing cause.

Despite inquiries, neither Anthropic, OpenAI, nor xAI provided comments in response to the media.
