Billionaire Elon Musk implied early Tuesday that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) may have committed “treason” due to remarks she made back in January 2024, accusing her critics of prioritizing Somalia’s interests over those of the U.S.
“This sounds like treason,” Musk tweeted, sharing a clip of her comments shortly after President Trump made an expletive-laden declaration against Democratic lawmakers during a rally in Pennsylvania.
“I love Ilhan Omar in this little turban, whatever her name is,” Trump expressed. “I love her. She just complains all the time. She’s from a country that’s considered the worst in the world, right?”
“We should get rid of her once and for all,” Trump continued, prompting the crowd in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, to chant “send her back!”
Following this, Omar’s January 27, 2024, statements to voters in the Twin Cities about preventing the independent Republic of Somaliland from entering a maritime access agreement with landlocked Ethiopia stirred up social media, thanks to Musk’s comments.
A translation of her remarks stated: “The U.S. government is simply following the instructions of the Somali people in the U.S. They will only do what we want them to do. Nothing else. They should follow our orders to protect Somalia’s interests…As long as I am in Congress, Somalia will not be in danger and its waters will not be stolen by Ethiopia or any other nation. The United States will not dare to support anyone who would take our land and seas from Somalia. Rest assured, I am here to safeguard Somalia’s interests within the American system.”
Omar’s statements sparked a backlash among her colleagues, with House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) demanding her “shameful resignation.” He described her comments as a direct violation of her oath of office.
In response to Trump’s remarks about her, Omar tweeted Tuesday night, “Trump’s obsession with me is beyond insane. He needs serious help. Lacking an economic policy to promote, he resorts to spewing bigoted lies. He continues to be a national disgrace.”
