Elon Musk’s Donation to Roman Archaeology

Elon Musk is contributing to a digital renaissance in archaeology that aims to reimagine life in ancient Rome, an effort that could significantly alter our understanding of history.

Recently, the CEO of Tesla donated $1 million to the American Institute for Roman Culture (AIRC), a nonprofit organization based in the U.S., through his foundation.

This funding is meant to support AIRC’s Ancient Rome Live platform, which focuses on documenting and preserving Roman heritage as part of the Expandere Conscientiae Lumen initiative.

During a ceremony on October 24 hosted by AIRC, Musk expressed his strong interest in ancient Rome, stating that the civilization holds a prominent place in the history of Western civilization. He believes that artificial intelligence could help bridge gaps in historical knowledge, suggesting it could aid in crafting “new history books purely based on ancient sources and archaeology.”

While AIRC has not detailed how AI will factor into its projects, it’s clear that researchers are using it for various tasks, such as translating ancient texts, analyzing artifacts, and digitally mapping old structures.

AIRC announced Musk’s generous contribution in a statement earlier this year, emphasizing that it strengthens their mission to enhance global understanding and appreciation of the ancient Roman world through education, research, and innovative methods. AIRC Director Darius Aria noted that this grant is a pivotal moment for Ancient Rome Live.

Aria also commented on the honor of receiving this grant, expressing excitement about being involved in innovative projects in this field. Musk has long shown a fascination for ancient history, particularly that of Rome. In early 2025, he was sighted visiting the Colosseum and the Pantheon in Rome.

In one of his posts on X, Musk questioned whether Marcus Aurelius could have done more for Rome or if he performed as admirably as possible.

Musk believes that the success of Rome stemmed primarily from its superior engineering. Interestingly, he has referred to the United States as the “new Rome.”

According to AIRC, Musk’s grant will play an essential role in its mission to broaden the global understanding of ancient Roman culture.

This isn’t the first instance where AI has been applied in archaeology. Recently, researchers from various countries uncovered that the Dead Sea Scrolls are older than previously believed, thanks to insights gained from an AI model.
