Elon Musk has announced plans to develop a version of Odyssey using artificial intelligence, following his criticism of Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation.
The tech entrepreneur shared a video created by Grok on X, showcasing scenes inspired by the ancient epic. He mentioned that by the end of this year, Grok Imagine aims to deliver a historically accurate film that remains true to Homer’s original work, although he didn’t elaborate on the details.
In a subsequent post, Musk expressed disappointment after a fan suggested giving Mel Gibson $100 million to create a historically precise adaptation of Odyssey—complete with authentic ships, armor, and dialogue from the original poem, delivered in Homeric Greek.
The Wrap highlighted that Musk’s dissatisfaction is shared by many, especially considering his previous comments on the casting choices in Nolan’s film featuring Matt Damon. For instance, back in January, Musk stated that Nolan had “lost his integrity,” reacting to a post criticizing the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy.
Moreover, in May, Musk reiterated his discontent with Nolan’s film, joining conversations about the casting decisions fueled by right-wing commentators. He agreed with a viewpoint suggesting that the casting of Nyong’o might have been a move to avoid accusations of racism, replying simply, “That’s the way it is.”
Despite Musk’s critiques and those from other Hollywood critics, Nolan’s Odyssey—which is an R-rated film lasting three hours—has performed well at the box office, surpassing expectations.
As reported, the film opened with impressive earnings, indicating robust audience interest, even exceeding initial projections of $80 million to $90 million.
